Sight Word Slider

A two-person reading game for early readers. Your child slides under a sight word and says it; you mark it right or not yet from an upside-down panel across the table. Letter-picture hints, full-screen mode, and words that come back until they stick.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do we play?
Lay a tablet flat between you and your child, or use full screen on a laptop. Your child slides the circle under the word from left to right, looking at each letter, and says the word. Your side of the screen is turned upside down so it reads the right way up from across the table: tap Correct if they read it, Not yet if they did not, or Skip.
Why does a grown-up check the answer?
Reading aloud is the skill being practised, and a browser cannot reliably tell whether a young child said the right word. A quick tap from you keeps the feedback accurate, and sitting together is part of what makes early reading stick.
Which words are included?
The Dolch Pre-primer list (40 words such as the, and, said and you) and the Primer list (52 words such as they, was, there and please) — the high-frequency words most children meet first. Pick one level or both in Settings.
How does it choose which words to show?
A word read correctly comes back less often; a missed word comes back sooner. Each round is mostly familiar words with no more than three new ones mixed in, which keeps it encouraging. When a word is missed it is shown and said aloud straight away so your child can say it with you, and it comes back a couple of cards later in the same round.
What does the hint do?
With Hint on, each letter shows its alphabet picture as the slider passes under it — s is for sun, d is for dog — which helps with letter recognition. A word read with the hint counts as correct but does not move up toward mastered, so mastery means reading it unaided. In words like said or the, the letters do not make their usual sounds, which is why they are learned as sight words.
Is my child’s progress saved?
Yes, in this browser only. Nothing is sent anywhere, and Reset progress in the settings starts every word over.
