Frequently Asked Questions
What is unclaimed property?
Money or assets a business loses track of — a final paycheck, a utility or rental deposit, an old bank or brokerage account, an insurance benefit, a refund, or a gift-card balance — that it must eventually turn over to the state. The state holds it indefinitely until you (or your heirs) claim it.
Does it cost anything to search or claim?
No. Searching and claiming through the official state programs linked here is always free. Be wary of “finder” services that offer to recover your money for a fee — you can almost always do it yourself for free.
Which states should I search?
Every state you have lived or worked in, plus states where relatives lived if you are an heir. Money stays with the state where the business was located, not where you live now. MissingMoney.com (run by NAUPA) searches most states at once.
How does the shareable link work?
Type a name and the URL updates to include it. Send that link and the page greets the recipient with “NAME, let’s find your unclaimed property.” If you also click a state, that selection is saved in the link too. Nothing is submitted to any server.
