Notepad

A plain-text scratchpad in your browser. Write or paste anything, formatting is dropped automatically, and download it as a .txt file. Autosaves as you type.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this strip formatting when I paste?
Yes, automatically. The pad is a plain text box, so pasting from Word, Google Docs, a PDF, an email or a web page brings the characters and drops the bold, colours, fonts, sizes and tables. Nothing you paste can carry hidden styling into the file you download.
What does the Tidy button do?
It cleans up the substitutions a word processor makes that survive a paste: curly quotes become straight ones, ellipsis characters become three dots, bullet characters become hyphens, non-breaking and zero-width spaces are normalised or removed, Windows line endings and trailing spaces go, and long runs of blank lines collapse. Real punctuation such as em dashes and accented letters is left alone, and Undo reverses the whole pass.
What kind of file do I get?
A UTF-8 .txt file with no byte-order mark and a trailing newline, which opens cleanly in Notepad, TextEdit, vim, VS Code or anything else. Set the name in the box at the top left. Ctrl+S (or Cmd+S on a Mac) downloads without reaching for the mouse.
Is my writing saved if I close the tab?
Yes. The note is saved in your browser as you type and comes back when you return to the page. It never leaves your device — there is no account and no server to send it to. That also means it is not a backup: clearing your browser data clears the note, so download anything you want to keep.
Can I open a text file I already have?
Yes. Click Open and pick a .txt, .md, .csv, .log or .json file and it loads straight into the pad, with the file name carried across for when you download it again.
