Frequently Asked Questions
How is gallons per mile calculated?
Gallons per mile (GPM) is simply 1 divided by MPG. For a 30 MPG car, that is 0.0333 gallons per mile. GPM gives a more linear view of fuel consumption than MPG.
How is EV cost per mile calculated?
EV cost per mile equals the electricity price per kWh divided by miles per kWh. At $0.13/kWh and 3.5 mi/kWh, the cost is about $0.037 per mile.
Why is average MPG not a simple average?
MPG is a rate, so averaging two MPG values directly gives a wrong answer. The correct method is to divide total miles by total gallons consumed. Driving 5,000 miles at 20 MPG and 5,000 miles at 40 MPG uses 375 gallons over 10,000 miles = 26.7 MPG average, not 30.
